Well, you can’t work every day!

Life in Tanzania is certainly a adjustment for us all. It is hot, common amenities that we find at home don’t exist here, groceries are different, and our daily routine changes, well, daily. Navigating the challenges at the hospital provides a repeating test for us all. With that all in mind, it’s important to take time to see the countryside and enjoy a bit of well earned rest and relaxation.

The newcomers this year took two days to go to Ngorongoro crater, which is an awesome place for a short safari. The density of animals is incredible and you were sure to see many big animals! They even got to see an exciting circle of life with a hyena hunt against wildebeest.

Last weekend we took a trip to Maderuni Falls, which given the unusual amount of recent rain was absolutely brilliant. The falls were amazing and kicking up a wonderful cooling mist. Drs. Ani and Josef took a long swim and Dr. Halvorson even joined them for a short dip.  Jen and I were quite content to enjoy the mist.  After that, we were entertained by local villagers as they taught us the techniques of coffee growing and preparation in their village, which is their main cash crop. I have enjoyed this trip several times, it never fails to be fun and relaxing.

Today, we journeyed to Serval wildlife preserve. There we got to feed many animals, including giraffe, monkeys, zebras, and visit with the lions! The refuge currently has two lions from South Africa. They are one year old but still huge. It is so amazing to be up close to these impressive cats!

All of these trips include the classic African box lunch. If you’ve spent any time vacationing in these parts, it will bring a smile to your face. You open your cardboard box to find a 1/4 grilled chicken, hard-boiled egg, small sandwich roll, sambosa x 2, yogurt, apple, banana, poundcake, and African Fruti drink box. It is a lot of food, and always enjoyed.

Tomorrow, Sunday, we have several cases in the operating room and are feeling refreshed to get back to work. Dr. Casey has joined us and brings her pediatric expertise to the teaching table. It is hard to believe that the trip is 75% complete. While still challenging, this year has been so much easier as many of the relationships have been already established, and we could quickly get back up to speed.
